If they confront their new friends about this supposed plot, they'll be met with genuine surprise! Not so much that someone would want Vanderhorn dead, at this point, but that they themselves could be suspected of involvement. Neither of them are particularly offended, and after a while of considering the offers, the servant boy will cautiously make a suggestion, since the effort was made to bond with him early on: at the risk of all of their freedom, he can probably distract Vanderhorn long enough to be subdued so someone can get the papers he won't let go of.
